FULL VERSION: Someone stuck this fancy label and called them "AI art". It's neither.
There is no artificial consciousness, learning or intuition in those programs, as the corporations that own them imply using glamorous lingo. They are algorithms that sample millions of images from artists who didn't give their consent (the recent most blatant case being Kim Jung Gi, the day after he died, and his family was never informed) and use them to generate images following a set of algorithms and the parameter a user imputs. Do you know what that is? It's called using intellectual property the company does not own and (for that company) profiting enormously from it without the consent of the IP owners, the creators of that art that is being sampled.
We're mired in ambiguous fuzzy definitions of things, but it's not that hard to define art, otherwise if anything can be labeled as art, then nothing is. Art is an act of creativity expressed through a set of techniques. There is no creativity in AI generated images, no more than there is in a google search. Do you call it art when you make a google search? There is no technique here, these algorithms are not tools any more than an artist you commission to create a portrait is the tool and you are the artist. What mental gymnastics is required for such an upside down worldview? It's like ordering a pizza with custom topping, have it delivered to you and claim that you cooked it. It is only art theft.
Don't support this. It doesn't "democratize" art. If anything it banalizes it and takes meaning away from it. Don't fall in the pit trap of validation this could give you without you having to actually learn the techniques you need to create art. That algorithm just steals from artists who try and already struggle to make a living with a hard work.
